Taoru Huang, LMHC (he/him)
Psychotherapist | Clinical Supervisor
In the city that never sleeps, life can change in the blink of a New York minute. But let's dispel the myth of effortlessness, for it sometimes confines us within this modern world. In such a bustling metropolis, where millions of people often adopt personas, we can feel compelled to put on masks, turning our lives into urban fairytales. However, I believe that authenticity shouldn’t be a luxury, rather a necessity for thriving in this city.
Coming from a cross-cultural background with intersecting identities, my perspective allows me to empathize with the unique challenges marginalized individuals may encounter when seeking support. Through my experiences, I have witnessed the transformative power that comes from narratives. It is a power that I hope to pass along to you. Together, we can create a safe space for you to express, explore, and embrace your true self.
I work with clients and clinicians at different stages of their journeys. In therapy, I help clients navigate life’s challenges, explore identity, and find new ways of moving forward. In supervision, I support clinicians as they refine their skills, expand their competence, and shape their professional voice. Whether in therapy or supervision, I strive to create spaces that are collaborative, affirming, and inclusive.
“Authenticity is a survival need.”
— Dr. Gabor Maté
Approach
My approach is eclectic and integrative, rooted in existential-humanistic psychology and its focus on choice and meaning. I draw from psychodynamic, EMDR, IFS, narrative, and relational modalities, weaving them together in ways that best support each client. Informed by multicultural, feminist, and queer theories—and by my perspective as an Asian queer therapist—I work to challenge the limitations of Americentric and heteronormative models of psychotherapy. By creating a non-judgmental, trauma-informed, gender-expansive, and sex-positive environment, I aim to help clients transform moments of challenge into opportunities for empowerment.
